You do not apply for a Chinese visa at a consulate. Your name, passport number, nationality and date of birth appear on the list. You travel as a group from the moment you check in.

The process starts with a passport scan. We submit scans to our Lhasa partner, who applies to the Tibet Tourism Bureau for the group permit and the group visa. The Tourism Bureau issues the permit first, then the Public Security Bureau issues the visa. Our Kathmandu permit desk collects the visa from the Chinese embassy in Kathmandu and pastes it into the group leader's passport. What happens if my passport scan is late?

The Tibet Tourism Bureau does not issue permits on weekends or Chinese public holidays. A scan submitted on a Friday afternoon may not be processed until Monday. We send three reminder emails: one when you book, one at 45 days before departure, one at the deadline. The scan must be in colour, at least 300 dpi, and show the bio page clearly. A photo of a passport on a table is not acceptable. We reject scans we cannot read and ask you to resubmit, which costs a day.

Can I use the group visa to enter Tibet overland?

Yes. We require proof of travel insurance that covers emergency evacuation from altitudes up to 5,200 m before we submit your passport scan. The insurance must cover Tibet specifically. Some policies exclude China or list Tibet as a restricted region. Read the policy wording. If Tibet is not covered, buy a different policy.

Emergency evacuation from Lhasa costs between USD 15,000 and USD 40,000 depending on the destination hospital. Helicopter evacuation from Everest North Base Camp to Kathmandu costs more. The insurance company pays the air-ambulance operator directly. We coordinate the evacuation, but we do not front the cost.

Travel insurance is listed in the exclusions on every Tibet tour. It is your responsibility, not ours. We check the certificate when you send your passport scan. No certificate, no permit application.

What is the best time to fly Kathmandu to Lhasa?

April, May, October and November offer the clearest skies and the most reliable Everest views. The flight operates year-round, but visibility drops in the monsoon months of June, July and August. Winter flights in December, January and February are clear but cold on the ground in Lhasa.
